Finnish Inventions

Finland is known for many great things, including northern lights, fantastic winters, and epic Eurovision contestants. What Finland isn’t best known for, and probably should be, is its talent for great inventions. It’s not necessarily recognized on a global scale as a hub for technology or innovation, and so its creations are often overlooked.

So, in this article, we’re going to celebrate Finland and some of the best things to come from the country. Check them out below.

Nokia Phones

The original Nokia phones are now looked back on fondly as reliable and robust pieces of kit, especially when compared to today’s modern smartphone. Most of us had a Nokia 3310 during our childhood, and will always remember Snake as being one of the first (and most fun) mobile games.

Nokia is a Finnish company, and its headquarters are located in Espoo, Finland. During the early 2000s peak, the company actually accounted for a large chunk of Finland’s GDP and is still successful to this day. Although Nokia smartphones haven’t taken off as they’d hoped, the original phone models are becoming surprisingly popular again.

Angry Birds

Angry Birds launched in 2010 and changed the mobile gaming landscape as we know it. Even today, 11 years later, the game is still enjoyed by millions of players and has released many new and updated versions. It’s available on both Android and iPhone devices and has had over 12 million downloads worldwide.

Angry Birds was created by Rovio Entertainment, a Finnish software company. Its well-designed graphics, sounds, and gameplay have gone on to inspire many other popular gaming franchises. Despite the incredible popularity of other games today like Candy Crush, Angry Birds will forever be considered one of the original and biggest mobile games.

Online Casinos

Okay, the Finns didn’t invent online casinos, but they’ve developed a whole new genre of their own. They’ve taken casino, or kasinot in Finnish, and made it something completely new. How? They’ve made it so that you can play without even creating an account. You can head to the site, add some funds and play within a few seconds.

Although this new casino tech is only available in Finland, we expect it to take over the rest of the world within the next 12 months. The only issues will be in countries with tougher regulations such as the UK and the USA.

Although we narrowed this article down to three Finnish inventions, the Nordic country is credited with many others. Other noteworthy things invented in Finland include the heart rate monitor, the safety reflector, and of course, the sauna.
