Gotham 4.03 - They Who Hide Behind Masks

The fourth season of GOTHAM finds Bruce Wayne (DAVID MAZOUZ) finally taking up the notion of protecting the innocents on the street while wearing a mask and a suit. It's not the Batman costume yet, but it's a giant step in the right direction. And that's not the only disguise Bruce Wayne has been crafting. He's also been taking cues from Alfred (SEAN PERTWEE) on creating a mask out of Bruce Wayne as well, as he tries out the spoiled billionaire brat routine that eventually will become the billionaire playboy public persona.

With Penguin (ROBIN LORD TAYLOR) bringing down crime statistics by legalizing it with special licenses, and the GCPD looking the other way, Detective James Gordon (BEN MCKENZIE) seeks help from an unlikely ally: retired mob boss Carmine Falcone (JOHN DOMAN), who has left Gotham for sunny Miami. It's a gutsy move, seeing as how Gordon shot and killed Falcone's son last season. It turns out there's another Falcone child, however -- Sofia Falcone (CRYSTAL REED, TEEN WOLF) -- and where her father is content to stay in Miami for his health, Sofia is more than ready to take on Gotham, and Jim Gordon in order to bring Penguin down.

But right now, Penguin seems to be on top of the world. He's running the city, and he's preparing an auction that includes an ancient Egyptian knife that is the perpetual target of Barbara Kean (ERIN RICHARDS) and Selina Kyle (CAMREN BICONDOVA), who has also taken to wearing a mask. When Bruce stops the initial theft and learns what knife is, he makes certain that the "billionaire brat" has fun at the auction and throws money around, guaranteeing he walks away with the knife, knowing it makes him a target for the person pulling all of Barbara's strings: Ra's al Ghul (GAME OF THRONES actor ALEXANDER SIDDIG).

Not everything is coming up roses for the Penguin, however. His prize possession and the centerpiece of his club has gone missing: the frozen-in-ice form of Edward Nygma (CORY MICHAEL SMITH) has been thawed out and stolen. The thief is one Myrtle Jenkins (GIRL CODE's ILANA BECKER), who deems herself The Riddler's #1 fan -- The Riddlette! She's committed to nursing Edward back to health, as his muscles have atrophied while he was on ice. But that's not the only thing that has atrophied; Nygma's lost the spark of brilliance, unable to even answer simple children's riddles. Not to worry, I'm sure something will come along to reignite that old mad genius. After all, this is Gotham, where even death is only an inconvenience.
