'Vampus Horror Tales' Adds Spanish Flavor To The Usual Anthology Film Fare

Oh, the horror anthology. As a cinematic sub-genre its roots lie not in film, but the pulpy realm of classic mid-20th century comic books. Those garish rags of cheap newsprint and lurid covers cast a spell on many a 1950’s child, the undisputed king of which was EC Comics, whose gasp! choke! style of bloody bite-sized morality plays filled such titles as The Haunt of Fear, The Vault of Horror, Shock SuspenStories and, most notoriously, Tales From the Crypt, which inspired the equally-infamous latter-day HBO television show of the same name.

Blue Underground presents Marquis de Sade's Justine on Blu-ray and 4K

Justine

The 1969 Jess Franco film Marquis de Sade's Justine is a costume drama wrapped in a sexploitation package that leaves the viewer lost at times while trying to follow multiple different side stories, with multiple characters that do not hold the audience’s attention long enough to care to see the outcome of their tales due to the story going in all different directions at once.

The main story follows the tale of a young girl named Justine (Romina Power), who is exiled from a convent with only the clothes on her back and a small handful of money to get by. It’s a “babe in the woods” story that quickly veers off the path into multiple side stories, all of which have Justine being tortured mentally and physically.

Eugenie... The Story of Her Journey into Perversion comes to 4K/Blu-ray from Blue Underground

Eugenie

In 1969, Jess Franco created Eugenie… The Story of Her Journey into Perversion. Coming off the heels of his previous adaptation of the Marquis De Sade’s tale, Justine, Franco sets this story of depravity in the modern era, and upon watching this for the fist time in 2023, it eerily predicts the Jeffery Epstein scandal of today.

Christopher Lee opens the movie with a monologue direct from the writings of the Marquis De Sade, standing at a podium in front of a satanic ritualistic killing of a naked woman behind him, while unsavory characters watch the scene. At first thought, it’s an almost Vincent Price way of being our host through the story. It’s only later do we discover his character will play a main role in this depraved tale.

Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania Gets Conquered By Kang

Marvel’s Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania is the latest film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the 31st film to be exact. It’s a film that might get the accolades that Marvel might be expecting, but that doesn’t mean that director Peyton Reed has concocted a dud. Taken on its own merits and considering what Marvel’s movie maestro Kevin Feige needed the film to do, it’s entertaining and sets up the next phase of the bigger MCU picture quite well. It also serves to underline just how incredible of an undertaking the MCU actually is and how even the grandest concepts can start to bow under their own weight.

Brennan Lafaro's Bloody Horror-Western Novel 'Noose' Misses The Mark

Ah, the Wild West. The mere mention of the term arouses near-mythic associations profoundly embedded in the American national psyche. That period of Manifest Destiny, of expansive vistas and painted horizons. Cowboys and Indians, desperadoes, cattle rustlers, long nights on the open range, showdowns at high noon. Jesse James and Billy the Kid, Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday and the shootout at the O.K. Corral. Even while it was happening, the era of westward expansion was being romanticized in dime novels and newspaper articles fed to a public fascinated with the lawless frontier, and the advent of Hollywood only cemented that legendary legacy in the cultural consciousness.

The Jorgensens: Americana Soul

The Joregensens Americana Soul

The Jorgensens latest release, Americana Soul on Paramour Records, is an aptly titled collection of ten original songs by the husband and wife team of Kurt and Brianna Jorgensen.

I say ‘aptly titled’ because this exceptionally talented duo and collective of equally talented supporting musicians have created a collection of songs with a sound that is both comfortable and relatable as Americana, and new and bold and full of soul.

Is this possible? Can such a blend of old and new be possible and not considered, say “New Country” music? The answer for me is a resounding yes!

From the moment the first beats from the title track “Old Black Crow” play, you realize right away this is not country music; and as you listen to the words and how they are sung, you realize this is story telling as it once was, and without the twangy nasality that sends chills up my spine like nails on a chalk board.

21st Century Kids Meddle With Ancient Evil In Estonian Dark Comedy 'Kratt'

Twenty-first century children are becoming more tech-savvy at a younger age than at any point in history. Yet the constant exposure to smartphones, tablets, social media and online video game platforms can and does have detrimental effects on childhood development. Eye strain, obesity, reduced sleep quality, increased feelings of inadequacy and anxiety, depression, cyberbullying, poor face-to-face social skills and an over-reliance on search bars and web browsers to glean information have all been cited as negative factors of the digital age in pediatric studies.

Relive the Glory Days of the Drive-In with Creature From Black Lake

Creature from Black Lake

1976’s Creature from Black Lake, directed by Joy N. Houck Jr., finally comes to Blu-ray from SYNAPSE FILMS. This long-forgotten film, produced in the double feature drive-in days, is more of a character-driven story than the gore and exploitation from films of that era, mixing humor and suspense along with very little on-screen horror to create a tale more about the characters rather than an ominous creature lurking in the woods.

Harkening back to the success of films such as The Legend of Boggy Creek, this film was cashing in on the Bigfoot hype and hysteria of the day and was made to be released first on the drive-in circuit, then re-released theatrically in 1982 as part of a multi-film package, 5 Deranged Features.

Ethan Van Sciver Secures Trademark for Comicsgate: What That Means Going Forward

Ethan Van Sciver Comicsgate Trademark

Ethan Van Sciver has long been regarded as the de facto head of the independent comics creation movement dubbed Comicsgate. Now that title becomes a little bit more official as Van Sciver has been awarded the commercial trademark for the Comicsgate brand, after a contentious legal battle for the claim against a filing made by Preston Poulter, another indie comics publisher of Pocket Jacks Comics.

The ruling in favor of Van Sciver, and his subsequent announcements of intent for use of the mark, has sent ripples throughout the various online communities, many of which lay claim to the ideologies of Comicsgate at some fundamental level. Questions arose as to how the use of the term may be regulated, if at all; who would be granted the approved use of the mark, and what sort of barriers might be in place to make that process difficult.

Beware The Moon Publishing's 'Red Ruin' Lends Kiwi Flavor To New Zealand-Set Zombie Apocalypse Novel

In 1968, a minor television commercial director helmed a low-budget black-and-white production in the pastoral American barrens outside Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and irrevocably altered the course of entertainment history. George A. Romero’s seminal Night of the Living Dead--with its stark survivalist plot, graphic gore and uncompromising ending--was unlike anything seen on the silver screen and became the forbearer of a wave of socially relevant horror untethered from the old-world monsters of previous generations. The undead gut-munchers assailing that backwoods farmhouse weren’t suave vampiric counts from some far-off land or melancholy noblemen afflicted by a loathsome lycanthrope curse--they were us, humanity reduced to its ravenous primordial impulses, a mindless mass, capable of crushing our fragile civilization with the sheer weight of their ghastly numbers.
