Is a New Young Justice in Our Future? Stargirl and the Lost Children #6

Stargirl and the Lost Children #6

One of the handful of titles that is making me optimistic once more about the publishing future of DC Comics has been Stargirl and the Lost Children. Written by Geoff Johns and illustrated byu Todd Nauck, the six-issue miniseries has chronicled the investigations of Stargirl and Emiko (aka Red Arrow) as they pursue clues about the sidekicks of the heroes of the Golden Age -- sidekicks that history has forgotten completely, except for an aging Dan, the Dyna-Mite (former sidekick to the explosive T.N.T.)

All-Star Superman Gets 4K for Warner's 100th

All-Star Superman

All-Star Superman is getting re-released on Blu-ray as part of the ongoing Warner Studios 100th anniversary celebration. As far as Superman animated titles go (not counting the actual ongoing animated series runs), this particular story is a good pick.

Adapting the limited series run by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely, the animators manage to stick very closely to the style of the books, while also retaining most of the story elements.

The adventure begins when Superman (James Denton) sets out to rescue a spacecraft from falling into the sun. Now, Superman has flown into and through the sun before, but we're going to forget that because this time the full-on exposure overloads his solar-receptive cells, mutating him to give him some new powers... and also a death sentence. Superman is dying, and that's just how Lex Luthor (Anthony LaPaglia) planned it!

Nemesis: Reloaded Springboards into Millarworld Crossover Event

Nemesis: Reloaded #5

In 1984, Mike W. Barr and Michael Golden introduced readers to a new villain -- The Wrath. No, not "Wraith" as in "ghost" -- "Wrath" as in "righteous anger." It was in Batman Special #1 in a story called "The Player on the Other Side," and it dared to posit a villain whose origins mirrored Batman's, only with law and crime reversed. The Wrath was an anti-Batman, who was the equal to the Dark Knight in tactics, skill, and physical prowess. Unfortunately for the readers, this was the character's only appearance.

Fleischer Shorts Get Super Cleanup for Blu-Ray Release

Fleischer Superman 1941-1943

Anyone wanting to see the masterful Max Fleischer studios treatment of Superman has, for years, been able to get a cheap copy, due to the shorts having fallen into the public domain. So why would you want to pick up yet another copy just because it's on Blu-ray?

Because the transfers are infinitely better, cleaner, and brighter. Not only have all the pops, pits, potholes and scratches been cleaned up so that the animation is pristine, but the scans of the master prints take in even more of the artwork.

We tested the new Blu-ray side-by-side with previous releases of the shorts. As an example, the short "Volcano" had an ever-present pit during the opening scenes; this has been removed. Additionally, what we didn't expect to see was more artwork that had been cut off from all four sides in previous releases. So you're quite literally getting more for your money with this purchase.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 Makes The MCU Feel Like 2017 Again

Six years ago, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 was released in theaters, eventually earning $869 million dollars in global box office revenue. Why is that important? Well, if you need me to tell you how the world has changed in the last six years, you’re probably not six years old yet and aren’t scouring the internet for film reviews. 2023 is a very different world from 2017, and yet  Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 feels like a pre-COVID Marvel Cinematic Universe movie should. It’s laugh out loud funny, heart-wrenchingly touching, brilliantly soundtracked, and leaves you wanting more. Spoiler alert: we likely will not see this version of the Guardians on screen again, due in no small part to director James Gunn’s recent appointment as Creative Director of DC Studios.

Mergers Collide in Justice League x RWBY

Justice League x RWBY: Super Heroes and Huntsmen

The acquisition of Rooster Teeth by Warner Brothers Discovery is showing some of its first efforts both in comics and comics-related animation. Over on the publishing side of the house, we are getting a miniseries that teams up the Justice League with the team from RWBY, as the girls chase their monsters over into our world. But on the animation side, it appears to be the opposite -- but with a surprise twist.

If you look at history, you will notice war as one of the most iconic events that most people cannot seem to forget. Although for some this might seem like a sadistic approach towards human psychology, in real life war is indeed a fascinating topic that has changed the course of history.

Modern society is deeply influenced by the events that happened during the war, in fact, it was reshaped.

Super Mario Bros. Speed Running it's way to $1 Billion

SUPER MARIO BROS. was highly criticized the moment Chris Pratt was announced to voice the title character. Then, on cue, the movie was review-bombed on Rotten Tomatoes and was declared “Rotten” according to the critic reviews. So if the critics and the fans both declared the movie dead on arrival, how did it 1UP the criticism?

Jarrett J. Krosoczka's Graphic Novel Memoir 'Sunshine' Is Life-Affirming Tale Of Hope Amid Adversity

An estimated 400,000 children worldwide under the age of nineteen develop cancer every year. Unlike adult cancers, which are most often ascribed to high-risk lifestyle or environmental factors (smoking, obesity, exposure to hazardous materials, etc.), genetic predisposition and mutations are the common causative culprits for children afflicted with the disease. For a family facing the unexpected tribulation of caring for a child stricken with cancer, the emotional, social and financial fallout can be devastating. The consistent strain of repeated hospitalizations, difficult treatments and the disruption of ordinary daily routines affects each familial member, and finding even the smallest glimmer of hope in such a bleak situation can be key for patients, parents and siblings alike.

Get a Room Already: The Parable of Sauron and Galadriel

Galadriel and Sauron, Rings of Power

Quick, what do the first season of Amazon’s Rings of Power and the Swedish black metal band Reverorum Ib Malacht have in common? If your first impulse was some variation on “Uh, nothing?” then you’re absolutely right. There is, however, a Deeper Answer. That answer is, “Well, nothing yet, but. . .”

You see, black metal has always had a rather ambivalent relationship with Professor Tolkien’s work. Pick any ten of these bands and nine of them will be explicitly Satanic—take, for example, the Dutch band Sauron and their 1999 EP “Death...Tyranny...War...Blasphemy”—and yet, at least two or three of those ten will probably also be named after people or places from Middle Earth. This is kind of funny, because Tolkien himself was extremely—well—Catholic.

Superman: Lost (...the Key to Good Storytelling)

Superman Lost 1

Superman: Lost is the first of a ten-chapter miniseries co-created by Christopher Priest and Carlo Pagulayan, with inks from Jason Paz.

It has beautiful artwork with some snappy dialogue between the Justice League members as they take on an international incident in the China Sea that turns out to be far more than just a kefuffle between countries. In fact, if it's not handled quickly, it could cause a black hole to swallow the Earth. And of course of all the Justice League members there, only Superman can fly into the event horizon of the mess and keep it from doing just that.

But at a cost.

Sucked into the black hole, Superman finds himself cosmologically lost. We don't know where. Could be another galaxy. Could be another dimension. Could be he's still in that tiny little space the size of an atom that the black hole collapsed into, or the quantum realm. Whatever, he's there.

And he's there for twenty years.

Eva Cassidy with the London Symphony Orchestra: I Can Only Be Me

Eva Cassidy

So let me start this review off by finishing it: If you are an Eva Cassidy fan, a fan of the female voice, a fan of beauty and the human spirit, then you need to have this album “Eva Cassidy with the London Symphony Orchestra: I Can Only Be Me” from Blix Street Records. Period. End of story.

Now that you know you need this, here’s why.

If you are familiar with Eva then you know the story behind her, her music, her sad passing, her posthumous success, and, most importantly, her beautiful voice and unequalled style. If not, this album will whet your appetite and set you on a course to obtain everything this young lady recorded in her brief career before passing away at 33 in 1996 from melanoma. I doubt anyone who has heard her, hasn’t been changed in some way by listening to her music.

Dragonslayer an 80s Fantasy that Borrowed from the Best and Predicted the Future

Dragonslayer

When a group of villagers have had enough of a dragon's threat over their village, they seek out a renowned sorceror (Ralph Richardson) to do battle with the beast and free them. It is not long, however, before our troupe's quest is opposed by none other than the king himself, who believes there is no need to confront the dragon and needlessly raise his ire; the dragon has been kept mollified through ritual sacrifice of the virgins of the town, drawn by a lottery of the king's own divising.

Even before the dragon can be found, the quest seems thwarted, when the king's men kill the sorceror. Seeking to take the place of his master, the young apprentice Galen (Peter MacNicol) takes up the charge and, aided with the power of a magical amulet, endures misadventure and romance with one of his traveling companions, Valerian (Caitlin Clark), who travels disguised as a boy.

TrickSix Films' Evocative Dark Drama 'ReBroken' Offers A Harrowing Portrait Of Grief

Few tragedies, if any, surpass the loss of a loved one. Persistent, traumatic grief can lead even the stoutest of souls into a benighted cycle of despair, and when that loss comes abruptly through accidents, violence, sudden illness or suicide, the emotional shock inflicts the most heinous of tolls upon survivors. Much has been written about the actual shape grieving takes; the popularly known ‘Five Stages of Grief’, more precisely called the Kübler-Ross model (and originally based on observations of terminally ill patients facing their own imminent deaths), is a passage through various phases that lead an individual to the acknowledgment of their new, unasked-for reality: denial, bargaining, anger, depression and, ultimately, acceptance.
