The Slingers return in Peter David's Ben Reilly: Scarlet Spider

From Marvel:

Las Vegas greets a new quartet of residents in BEN REILLY: SCARLET SPIDER #8 on September 27 and they will thrill long-time Spider-fans. Ben, on the other hand, might just take a little longer to win over.

The Slingers have returned and they do not think Reilly should be wearing the webs and will not hesitate to tell—or show—him so. Unfortunately, matters have been complicated even more they know as one of their own hides a secret under their mask.

Writer Peter David would not pull back that mask fully, but he did offer us a peek in this interview.

The Flash Season 3 Comes at You Fast on Blu-ray

The Flash Season 3 on BD

In the first season of The Flash, Barry Allen (GRANT GUSTIN) took on the Reverse-Flash (played, most of the time, by TOM CAVANAGH and sometimes by MATT LETSCHER). He was a super-speedster, just like The Flash.

In the second season of The Flash, the producers opened up the multiverse, and Barry took on Zoom (played, most of the time, by TEDDY SEARS). He was a super-speedster, just like The Flash.

In the third season of The Flash, the producers tried something different, and Barry took on Savitar (played, some of the time, by GRANT GUSTIN). He was a super-speedster, just like The Flash.

Battle of the Bumblebees

Variety is reporting that Hasbro is suing DC to prevent them from using the name Bumblebee.

Hasbro, owner of the Transformers brand, filed a lawsuit on Monday accusing Warner Bros. and DC Comics of trademark infringement. The suit claims that the DC “Bumblebee” — a teenage girl with the ability to shrink — could easily be confused with the Autobot “Bumblebee.”

Hasbro has a lot riding on the “Bumblebee” character, set to star in the first Transformers spinoff, which is due in theaters at Christmas 2018.

First look at "new" Misty Knight from Luke Cage Season 2

Entertainment Weekly posted a first look at the "new" Misty Knight.  At the end of Defenders, Misty gets her arm chopped off by Iron Fist's enemy Bakuto.

Marvel, as usual, is keeping details of how and when Misty gets her bionic arm under wraps, but in the comics, Misty’s bionic arm was designed by Tony Stark and Stark Industries after she lost the limb in a bombing. The arm grants her superhuman strength and a slew of other abilities involving energy blasts and gravity fields and even a nifty ability to control robots.

A Renaissance of the Renaissance. Blackmore’s Night: To The Moon And Back, 20 Years And Beyond

Blackmore's Night To the Moon and Back 20 Years and Beyond

The Beatles once said, “It was 20 years ago today Sergeant Pepper taught the band to play.” Well, it’s been 20 years since Richard Blackmore and Candice Night taught the minstrels to play, bringing a renaissance to the Renaissance, so to say. And it’s funny to think that the music they play today technically predated the music he played decades prior by centuries.

Now, I have been a huge fan of the Renaissance (the time, not the band (but I do like the band’s music too)) since I attended my first Medieval festival. My friends and I would truck up to the Renaissance Fair in Tuxedo, New York and, closer to home, in nearby Huntington Long Island. I just felt I belonged.

The Longbox Short-List - Week of August 30, 2017

Welcome back to Critical Blast’s weekly look at what new comics you should check out each week.   Just a warning, I make these picks pretty much a week BEFORE I actually get to read any of these comics, so if something is a stinker, I take no blame on that.  Let's get to it!

Comics shipping this week

Fifth week! Always a bit of a smaller week back in the day, but that has changed in recent years. It’s still a relatively short list this week though.

Everything Everything wasn’t Everything

Everything Everything

Maddy just turned 18 and has never ventured outside her environmentally controlled house. Her clothes are serialized and all white. Everyone that enters the house must change shoes and wash their hands before being let in. This is because Maddy has a rare immunodeficiency called SCID. Despite being an avid reader, online book reviewer, and loving to design architecture and drawing, Maddy claims her life is pretty boring. She relies a lot on her extensive imagination. But Maddy’s only interactions are with her mom and her nurse, until the cute boy moves in next door.

Olly wears all black and has a bad boy exterior, but despite his appearance is really kind at heart. And from the moment he notices Maddy through the window he tries to meet her. Only trouble is, no one new is allowed to enter the house, because they might get Maddy sick.

A Different Kind of Holmes: Mycroft Holmes and the Apocalypse Handbook

Mycroft Holmes and the Apocalypse Handbook, Titan Comics

I'm a sucker for a good steampunk story. There's a certain irresistable charm to the notion of high technology in such a low-tech world as the Victorian era. And that is, naturally, what is up in the world of MYCROFT HOLMES AND THE APOCALYPSE HANDBOOK, written by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Raymond Obstfeld.

Her Boyfriend's Back, and Sabrina's Gonna Be in Trouble in SABRINA #8

Sabrina #8

After Harvey Kinkle, Sabrina's boyfriend, saw into her secret life and was killed and eaten by witches for doing so, Sabrina's been understandably a bit...perturbed. But thanks to the intervention of another witch at school, Ms. Porter, Sabrina gained a spell of necromancy to return Harvey from the dead. And now, it's date night!

Alas, what Sabrina doesn't realize is that Harvey's body is back, but Harvey's not in it. Instead it is occupied by the spirit of her father, Edward Spellman, and he's very proud of the results of his experiment--Sabrina, the offspring of witch and mortal. And he's also got an eye out for revenge against his enemies, which would seem to include Sabrina's aunts, Edward's sisters Hilda and Zelda Spellman.

Paul McCandless' Morning Sun an Ear-Opening Experience

If you’re like me--and I would suspect there are as many that are as aren’t--your take on the oboe is that it is an instrument that is part of the orchestra, an instrument that contributes to the total sound but not one that ever takes the lead, or is as famous as, say, the cello, the French horn, the violin or the flute; sort of the second rhythm guitar or third back-up singer in a rock band. You know it’s there, but you can’t really make out what it sounds like. Couple that with an old saying attributed to the instrument: “The Oboe is an ill wind woodwind that nobody plays well.” You’re left wondering, “Why would anyone want to have an ensemble that features such a blasé instrument?”

One of the most enjoyable experiences in reviewing music is that, occasionally, you get to listen to something you might otherwise have never come across, thought about listening to, or were aware even existed.

With MORNING SUN, I have had such an experience!

Farts, Femdom, and Fun: Batman and Harley Quinn Shatter the Timmverse.

Batman and Harley Quinn DVD

When Poison Ivy (PAGET BREWSTER) and the Floronic Man (KEVIN MICHAEL RICHARDSON) team-up to recreate and viralize the Alec Holland bio-restorative formula in an effort to save the world from global warming by turning everyone into plants, it's up to Batman (KEVIN CONROY) and Nightwing (LOREN LESTER) to put a halt to their plan. There's just one hitch: finding them. This leads our heroes to turn to Ivy's closest confidante and gal-pal, Harley Quinn (MELISSA RAUCH, THE BIG BANG THEORY).

Thus begins a tale of the bats and the batty which takes the familiar environs of the Bruce Timm BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES universe and runs it through the lens of Adult Swim.

The Hits Keep Coming on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Guardians of the Galaxy 4K

They may be heroes to the galaxy, but some of them are still little sneak thieves. That's the spark that gets the ball rolling in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 as the Guardians have been hired by a race of golden skinned elites called The Sovereign to protect a battery from a monstrous creature that wants to eat it. But when Rocket pockets a few for himself on the way out, the Sovereign doesn't take kindly to it, and sends about a bajillion ships after them (flown remotely from what looks like a high-tech arcade).

Their escape leads the team into a meeting with a being who calls himself Ego (KURT RUSSELL), and he's got a secret or three: he's a Celestial, he's actually a planet, and -- oh -- he's Peter Quill's (CHRIS PRATT) father! That's right, Peter isn't just egocentric, he's also Ego-decentric. (Okay, I'm making that word up. Sue me. That's how terms are born, people make them up.)
