Medieval Midlife Crisis Reaches Boiling Point in Pedersen's BURNING WITH ANGST

Burning With Angst

David J. Pedersen's ANGST saga continues to be a breathtaking adventure. The titular hero, Angst, is in his forties and living the life he dreamed of when he was younger -- being that of a hero saving his family, his friends, his country, and quite possibly all the world. Unfortunately, it comes at a cost far beyond creaking bones and physical exhaustion.

Angst is a magic weilder -- even a powerful one. But his magic became that much stronger when he bonded with Chrysleanor, a foci in the form of a sword as tall and as wide as a very tall and very wide man. This made Angst an Al'eyrn, a sort of super magic user of legend. Then Angst did the impossible and bonded with a second foci, Dulgirgraut, a sword of similar proportions but entirely different power. This made Angst something hitherto unseen in history, something that shouldn't exist.

Monster Trucks an 80s-Style Creature-Action Film That's Family Friendly

MONSTER TRUCKS isn't a movie that was really meant to do well on the big screen, much as the hopes of Director CHRIS WEDGE (ICE AGE) might have been otherwise. It has good special effects, and a fairly decent budget, but it's the storyline that holds it back from being a box office success. But that doesn't mean the story is a bad one, it means it simply is what it is -- and about 30 years too late. The film would have done exceedingly well in the 1980s, as it has all the tropes of some of the best not-too-scary monster flicks of that bygone era. Think GREMLINS and E.T.

ARGYLE FOX by Marie Letourneau - A Fun New Picture Book for Kids

From author-illustrator Marie Letourneau comes an adorable new picture book, ARGYLE FOX.

Argyle Fox just wants to play outside. However, the gusty wind has other ideas. Despite his mother's warnings, Argyle Fox tries to build a card tower outside - but the wind quickly whooshes and blows the tower over. Determined to find a game to play on this windy day, Argyle Fox sets out to try different activities - but can he find something to do that the weather won't ruin?

Cute and whimsical full-page illustrations show Argyle Fox's adventures in enticing colors. This is a great story about using critical thinking to solve problems rather than giving up. While Argyle Fox's "answer" might be obvious to adult readers, children will love watching him think through his conundrum and try different activities. I loved the illustrations!

This is a quick read I think kids will really enjoy.

From Spy to P.I., Archer Season 7 is not P.U.

Archer Season 7

ARCHER Season 7 takes our dysfunctional “family” of spies into a new direction with this 2-disc DVD set from FX and 20th Century Fox.

After failing as government agents-turned-drug-dealers and being blacklisted by the CIA, the team tries their hand at being private investigators. The only one able to get his Private Investigator’s license is Cyril Figgis (voiced by CHRIS PARNELL), so they all reluctantly (except for Cyril) now work for the “Figgis Detective Agency) and set up shop in Los Angeles.

FENCES: A Heart-Wrenching Story of Family and Confinement

Fences

“Some people build fences to keep people out – and other people build fences to keep people in.”

Based on August Wilson's renowned play, FENCES is a stunning, heart-wrenching portrait of a family and a story about feeling trapped in your life.

There’s an old bit of writing advice that I’ve always liked: your character doesn’t need to be likable to hold the audience’s attention – they need to be compelling. FENCES is a prime example of this.

Seven Masters of Magic Make THE ILLUSIONISTS: LIVE FROM BROADWAY Must See

THE ILLUSIONISTS: LIVE FROM BROADWAY, at the Fox Theatre in St. Louis Mar 31 - Apr 2.

THE ILLUSIONISTS: LIVE FROM BROADWAY is a tricky show to review, no pun intended. How can I discuss magic tricks, illusions, mentalism, and death-defying stunts when I don’t know how 99% of them are done and magic is generally a visual event that words alone cannot reproduce? THE ILLUSIONISTS is a show featuring seven of the top magicians and daredevils in the world. It’s an event that must be seen to be believed, and you only have until the last two shows on Sunday, April 2, 2017 to catch them at the Fabulous Fox Theatre in St. Louis before they disappear, presumably in a puff of theatrical smoke.

The seven masters of their art are:

Subtle as a Spring Shower: April Bombshell Momma Kawaii

April 2017 Bombshell Momma Kawaii as Yui from Diabolik Lovers

When participating in the fandom of cosplay -- particularly when you're participating in it from the vantage of a spectator -- it's easy to get caught up in the intricate props, the ostentatious costuming, the unreal weaponry and accoutrements.

But cosplay can include far more subtle aspects. Not every worthwhile character out there requires all the baggage that serves as their calling card; not every anime girl is defined by her accessories and not every superhero boy is defined by the size of his sword.

As subtle as a spring rain comes our April Bombshell, Momma Kawaii, a cosplayer who can do as much with just her eyes as many do with a whole garage full of flexible foam and reams of fabric. Whether portraying Yui from DIABOLIK LOVERS (left) or Noodle from GORILLAZ (below), Momma Kawaii is the definition of "less is more."

Pep Talk: Riverdale, Episode 108, "The Outsiders"

#Bughead Getting #Busy

It's been a few weeks since we've had a new episode of RIVERDALE, so thankfully we get a really quick time capsule of the Pregnancy of Polly Cooper (TIERA SKOVBYE) that comes with a bit of new information as we see her talking with Sheriff Keller (MARTIN CUMMINS): Jason Blossom (TREVOR STINES) truly was delivering drugs before he was murdered, but as a one-time deal to make cash for him and Polly to start their new lives. He took the job from the South Side Serpents.

Ira Bloom: Hearts and Other Things You Pour Into a YA Novel

Ira Bloom

If you haven't already rushed out and ordered your copy of HEARTS & OTHER BODY PARTS, then you have not yet begun your journey down what is almost certain to be the YA paranormal romance everyone will be reading and talking about this summer. You'll find yourself believing in witches, vampires, demons and other kinds of monsters. What you will have the most difficulty believing is that this novel is the first for author (yes, he can officially use that title on business cards, resumes, and -- shudder -- tax forms now) Ira Bloom. It's too seasoned, too nuanced, and just too good to be the product of the new kid on the YA block. (Oh yeah, and he has a Y-chromosome, too! How rare is that in the YA paranormal romance marketplace?)

We had the privilege of snaring an interview with Bloom before his schedule becomes swamped with such requests. Somewhere along the way, you'll probably see a link to Amazon to pick up this book. You'd be smart to click on it.

History Notes, Legends of Tomorrow Episode 216, "Doomworld"

I think we can all agree that, for the course of the series, LEGENDS OF TOMORROW has leaned more toward the silly than the serious. That's by design, and it works for this show, but it's certainly had something of an impact on the episode gradings here.

Not this week. For this reviewer, "Doomworld" was firing on all cylinders, and I couldn't be happier with the final product.

The Legion of Doom -- Damien Darhk (NEAL MCDONOUGH), Eobard Thawne (MATT LETSCHER) and Malcolm Merlyn (JOHN BARROWMAN), now joined by a past version of Leonard Snart (WENTWORTH MILLER) and former Legend Mick Rory (DOMINIC PURCELL) -- have used the Spear of Destiny to rewrite reality to their own whim. Thawne himself gives the opening monologue to this episode, which is fitting and sets just the right tone.

Along with it came an announced release date of 7.16.17. So as the Summer months get heated up, expect the realm of the seven kingdoms to start cooling down. Winter is Coming after all.

Whether you're a fan of the books or just the tv show, the trailer shows what many of us knew was coming. A showdown of leaders from all over the realm. The trailer focuses on Jon Snow, Daenerys Targaryen and Cersei Lannister. It also appears to include our first look at Dragonstone's throne room.

Destiny 2 Trailer: "There Will be a Ton of Loot!"

Several days ago we tipped you off that a full trailer for Destiny 2 would arriving today. It's time to "Rally the Troops" and push the play button.

Things are about to get crazy.

Zavala and Cayde-6 are speaking to the Titans and Hunters respectively, each of them describing how the world as they know it has changed. And invasion has come. The tower has been destroyed and new legends will rise. Most importantly for gamers, according to Cayde-6: "There will be a ton of loot!"

How can you not appreciate that declaration?

Jenna Elfman Returns to Sitcom TV with IMAGINARY MARY

Imaginary Mary

JENNA ELFMAN returns to manic comedy in the new ABC comedy, IMAGINARY MARY.

Elfman portrays Alice, a single career woman whose life was put on its current track through the help of an imaginary friend she created when she was six, Mary (voiced by RACHEL DRATCH), to help her cope with her parents disastrous marriage and divorce. Mary helped Alice be independent, get into some trouble, and then disappeared when Alice "became a woman" (in just the way you're probably thinking I mean).

Trailer for Stephen King's It

Ever since they announced they were doing a new film version of IT, I have been real curious.  I loved the old mini-series, and the book remains one of my favorite Stephen King books, just behind THE STAND and DARK TOWER.  Warner Brothers posted a trailer this morning.

I love that the trailer's opening is basically where the book begins, with Georgie meeting his death at the hands of Pennywise.  The trailer is suitably creepy, and I am definitely looking forward to seeing this on the big screen.  Check it out below.  IT will be in theaters on September 8.

Mr. Dave Will Have Kids, Parents "Feeling Good"

Mr Dave Feeling Good

You know, it’s a good time to be a kid because it’s a good time for children’s music.

It seems kiddo music has evolved into different styles of their own: there are bubbly kinds, country kinds, Jazzy kinds, and hip hop/urban kinds. And that is awesome because there are kiddos all over this country, in the city as well as in the suburbs and country, and they each have things particular to the way they live.

The latest album here from the Windy City’s own “Mr. Dave” Dave Hamilton, FEELING GOOD, is one such album that speaks to kids everywhere and includes those who are living in the city, doing this with a not so much nautical, but an island sound to it. That’s not to say every song has a watery beat to it. Nay-nay, this album, while only 10 songs long, communicates to kids everywhere with jazzy tunes, eclectic rock, and hip-hop tunes with a heavy bass tone, as well as songs with a surfer sound to them--and that’s what makes this album such fun.

Catching Up: The Flash Episode 318, "Abra Kadabra"

Flash 318 Abra Kadabra

Finally we get the introduction of a classic FLASH villain who's gonna reach out and grab ya. (Sorry, but I've been watching the whole episode with The Steve Miller Band song running through my head. If you don't know which one, hie thee to the Googles.)

DAVID DASTMALCHIAN (ANT-MAN, MACGYVER) plays the larcenous legerdemainiac from the future, Abra Kadabra, as the DC Universe gets a little broader with references to Stagg Industries and Kord Industries -- known for their prominence with DC superhero characters Metamorpho and Blue Beetle, respectively. But what does a guy from the future, with technology so advanced it is indistinguishable from magic -- and yes, Caitlin (DANIELLE PANABAKER) and Cisco (CARLOS VALDES) both acknowledge Arthur C. Clarke's law in the episode -- need with technology from the 21st century?

"Last Call": Official Trailer for Destiny 2 Coming Soon!

Information regarding the highly anticipated sequel to the popular game, DESTINY, has been slowly rolling out. Today we got a 'teaser' announcing the release date for the trailer to DESTINY 2!

Lately, trailers are becoming just as important as the actual thing, so the trend is to issue a 'teaser' to announce the trailer for something big approaching. While it was pitched as a teaser, this feels more like a cut scene in the game.

Cayde-6 (voiced by Nathan Fillion) is telling a story about an attack that he survived. It's revealed that his banter is reserved for an audience of one, a maintenance droid who happens to be sweeping up the remains of the bar that Cayde-6 is in. Panning out the place is falling apart all around him in flames.

A sign of things to come?
