Time Shifters Straddles Moods of Tragedy, Silliness

Time Shifters

Chris Grine (CHICKENHARE) puts out graphic novels with all the restraint of a fourth grade storyteller. His cast of characters are the "pulled out of a hat at random" variety pack that should have absolutely no logical team cohesion -- how else to explain that the good guys are a scientist, a ghost, a chicken-beaked T-rex and Robot Abraham Lincoln, and that the bad guys are a skeleton in a pressurized space suit, a hollow mummy, and Vampire Napoleon?

Pep Talk: Riverdale, Episode 106, "Faster, Pussycats! Kill! Kill!"

Josie and the Pussycats - with Veronica

Despite my misgivings with the pilot of RIVERDALE, I've nonetheless continued to check in on the CW take on the Archie Comics gang. And with Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa at the helm, I at least understand why it can't be a lighthearted, kid-friendly rom-com. It's how he views the Archie world, through a lens darkly. It worked for AFTERLIFE WITH ARCHIE, and so long as I view RIVERDALE as another alternate look at Archie, I can make peace with it. I just can't let my nine year old boy watch it, much as he wants to, having seen the ads in his mountain of Archie digest comics he reads endlessly.

DuckTales First Look Trailer

Disney XD posted up a trailer for their new Duck Tales reboot!

Commentary: Okay, first the "negatives." The animation reminds me of the Mickey Mouse shorts. I like that in small doses, but not sure it would work for a full length cartoon. And Huey, Dewey, and Louie's voices already annoy me.

The Adventures of John Blake: Mystery of the Ghost Ship

Adventures of John Blake, Mystery of the Ghost Ship

Philip Pullman is breaking into the graphic novel business, and he's bringing the accomplished Fred Fordham with him.

The hardcover GN releasing in May is THE ADVENTURES OF JOHN BLAKE: MYSTERY OF THE GHOST SHIP, which leads me immediately to think there's more to come than what's just between the covers herein. And what an adventure it is! Pullman wastes no time establishing the eerie legend of the Mary Alice, a ghost ship that appears in the fog, and the demon boy in the red shirt that accompanies it. The sightings go back for centuries, but it's a story that has its origins in the early days of the twentieth century, and involves no less a personage than Albert Einstein.

Taking Flight: SUPERGIRL 0214 "Homecoming" Unravels Family Ties

Monday's episode of SUPERGIRL brought the Danvers' dad, Jeremiah, home to be reunited with his family. But did everyone welcome him back with open arms?

The episode starts off with some funny moments as Mon-El awakens from a night spent at Kara's. Wondering why she wasn't there when he woke up, he opines on whether that means 'it' was really bad...or really good.

When she returns, she comes bearing flowers and coffee for Mon-El. She also requests that when they get to the DEO, he says nothing about their relationship. She wants to keep it under wraps for now. When they arrive Mon-El makes his announcement in a way that Ron Burgundy would be proud.

Win RESISTANCE on DVD

The year is 1944. D-Day has failed, and Britain is under Nazi occupation. Sarah Lewis (ANDREA RISEBOROUGH), a 26-year-old farmer's wife, awakens to find that her husband along with all the other men are gone -- presumably having fled the village to join the Resistance. Shortly thereafter, a German patrol arrives and sets up an outpost in the valley. When the severe winter forces the two groups to cooperate, Sarah befriends the commanding officer, Albrecht (TOM WLASCHIHA), blurring the lines between collaboration, duty, occupation, and survival.

Based on the acclaimed novel by Owen Sheers, this film is directed by Amit Gupta.

Catching Up: The Flash Episode 314, "Attack on Central City"

Love is in the air as Team Flash revels in having thwarted Grodd's gorilla invasion by heading it off at the pass on Earth 2. Barry (GRANT GUSTIN) is sure the headline for the future will change, and that the team is on the right path to saving Iris (CANDICE PATTON) from being murdered by Savitar.

It's Valentine's Day, but H.R. (TOM CAVANAGH) is calling it "Friends Day" as it is referred to on his home on Earth 19. H.R. has S.T.A.R. Labs all decked out in finery, much to the chagrin of his doppelganger from Earth 2, Harrison Wells. Jesse (VIOLETT BEANE) takes this time to tell her father that she's going to stay on Earth 1 with wally (KEIYNAN LONSDALE). They expect him to lose his cool, but he dissolves into a disgrunted "Okay," then remains taciturn for the remainder of the episode.

In Like a Lion: March Bombshell Michael Bruener is Ready to Blow You Away

March 2017 Bombshell

It seems no matter what convention you attend, there's always a joker running around. No, literally, a Joker! Sometimes more than one.

But few can carry it off with the panache of our March Bombshell, Michael Bruener! Not only does he have the perfect bone structure for the lanky clown prince of crime, his tailoring skills deliver a tuxedo that you just can't pick up off the rack or a costume shop.

We were also impressed with Michael's John Constantine, someone who doesn't get a lot of cosplay attention. So as the winds of March bring in a blustery Spring, we hope you'll take a moment to enjoy Michael's unique cosplay and follow him on Instragram.

The First Ever Critical Blast Bombshell of the Year is...

Curtains

Not a hoax! Not a dream! Not an imaginary story! Yes, we're unveiling here and now the winner of our first ever Critical Blast Bombshell of the Year!

The Critical Blast Bombshell of the Month was an idea we had in an editorial brainstorming session that involved no alcohol. Starting back in July, we said we wanted to devote attention to some of the great cosplayers out there -- but we were going to be a little different about it. We weren't going for cheesecake (although we understand that you can't dress up like a fantasy character without running up against that), but for people, regardless of gender or body type. If you want that, there are too many other places on the Internet you can go to get it.

The Longbox Short-List - Week of March 1, 2017

Welcome back to Critical Blast’s weekly look at what new comics you should check out each week. Just a warning, I make these picks pretty much a week BEFORE I actually get to read any of these comics, so if something is a stinker, I take no blame on that. Let's get to it!

Strange Days Indeed: Marvel's Doctor Strange Released to Blu-ray

Own Doctor Strange, now on Blu-ray

Remember when Robert Downey Jr. was cast to play Tony Stark in IRON MAN, and everyone said how he was perfect for the role?

I wonder if the big screen will ever be big enough to fit Downey's Tony Stark and Benedict Cumberbatch's Stephen Strange at the same time--because the British actor who gave us a new SHERLOCK is absolutely spot-on as the egotistical Dr. Strange!

Out today on Blu-ray and DVD is Marvel Entertainment's DOCTOR STRANGE, directed by Scott Derrickson, and co-starring Chiwetel Ejiofor as Mordo, Rachel McAdams as Strange's estranged (no pun intended) girlfriend, Benedict Wong as Wong, and Tilda Swinton as The Ancient One. The film wastes no time showing us the character flaws as well as the innate genius of surgeon savant Dr. Stephen Strange before diving right into the accident that ruins his hands and sends him on a quest for the medical miracle to repair them.

Heh Heh! This is Cool! Beavis and Butt-Head: The Complete Collection on DVD

Beavis and Butt-Head Complete Collection on DVD

I have sometimes wondered to myself: Am I the only person in existence that still has a Beavis and Butt-Head “Final Word”” still in original package? I don’t know. But what I do know is that now, finally, the world of Beavis and Butt-Head is available in a comprehensive 12 DVD set that includes every season, the music videos, a collector’s edition of the movie “Beavis and Butt-Head Do America," the original un-cut short “Frog Baseball,” and a plethora of other extras that includes everything from VMA appearances, a Thanksgiving Special with Kurt Loder, the 95’96’ Butt-Bowls, the MTV 20th Anniversary Special, a 2011 Comicon Panel featuring Mike Judge and moderator Johnny Knoxville, and seemingly countless promos, montages and more.

O'Fallon Theatre Works' PETER AND THE STARCATCHER Is A Family Friendly Treasure

O'Fallon Theatre Works presents PETER AND THE STARCATCHER, Feb 24 - Mar 5

“Avast, ye scurvy dogs, and heave to! Aye, you’ll hoist me treasure, or you’ll be sleepin’ in Davy Jones’ locker, argh!” Sigh…I think I’d have made a great pirate. I’m told I have a certain kind of intensity in my eyes, I don’t particularly like shaving, and I have a pet macaw. All I need is an ocean, a galleon and a time machine. Since I can probably only get my hook onto two of those three piratical requirements, I guess I’ll settle for the next best thing: pirate-centric community theatre! Hot on the heels of earning 16 nominations for NOISES OFF and ANNE FRANK at this year’s Arts For Life Awards, O’Fallon Theatre Works presents PETER AND THE STARCATCHER, running February 24 - March 5.

In Search of the (Maybe Not So) Lost Testament of Alexander the Great

The Lost Testament of Alexander the Great by David Grant

In Edgar Allan Poe's short story, "The Purloined Letter," the hero C. Auguste Dupin outwits the police when he is brought in to consult on a stolen letter being used for blackmail purposes. In the story, the police search an apartment where they know the letter to be hidden, checking the drapes and other unique hiding places that might conceal it. Dupin saves the day when he looks for the letter and finds it sitting out in the open, too obvious to be the object the police sought. The story is often pointed to as the epitome of the adage, "Hiding in plain sight."

Critical Blast & Game Jab Present Top Ten Games of 2016

TOP TEN

2016 is the third year that Critical Blast has done our Best Of awards, but it's the first year that we've had a category for Best Video Game -- largely due to the inclusion of Game Jab as our partners in this (formerly) under-represented arena.

Now, normally, this is where we would tell straight up who the winner is, after telling you who all the other nominees were, as well as include a highly technical (and very scientific) pie chart, because nothing says statistical selection like a pie chart.

But the boys had a different idea. So click the play button below and setting in for the most anticipated awards show on the Internet! (Oscars, eat your heart out!) Because it's time for the...
