Titan Comics' ROBOTECH #1 Wins with a Bold, New Vision

Originally scheduled for release on July 26th, it was announced at yesterday’s SDCC Robotech panel that a minor distributor delay has pushed it back to August 3rd.

Producer Carl Macek was tasked with adapting the anime for the US Market. To meet syndication requirements, Macek skillfully edited three Japanese anime series (Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross and Genesis Climber MOSPEADA) and created the concept of Robo-technology, to tie them together into one epic 85-episode saga.

Bloodlines: SyFy Releases KRYPTON Teaser Trailer

SyFy has released a teaser trailer for their mid-season series KRYPTON and it's faster than a speeding bullet. You'll want to give this several viewings to take it all in.

Which, given the fact that its only 20 seconds long should be pretty easy. But we're here to break it down for you anyways.

The trailer starts off with the destruction of Krypton, going in reverse. You see a huge city landscape (Kandor?) and a ship flying towards its destination.

Someone gets rocked with a punch that's similar to MMA's 'Superman Punch', where the assailant jumps in the air and comes down with a massive blow to the head. Fitting.

The Juice is Loose! O.J. Simpson Makes Parole

O.J. Simpson Parole Hearing 2017

Nearly ten years after going to prison for attempted robbery, Orenthal James Simpson has been granted parole. But don't go lining up for autographs just yet. The beleagured football star / film actor has to wait until October 1, at the earliest, before he can set foot on the sunny side of those prison walls.

The 70 year old who who was a running back for the Buffalo Bills and who comically portrayed Nordberg in the POLICE SQUAD! films will likely always be remembered for his role as a suspect in the murders of his wife, Nicole Simpson, and her associate Ronald Goldman, a case that obsessed American culture and engulfed media outlets for much of 1994 as the courtroom drama unfolded with phrases like, "If it doesn't fit, you must acquit."

The Longbox Short-List - Week of July 19, 2017

Welcome back to Critical Blast’s weekly look at what new comics you should check out each week.   Just a warning, I make these picks pretty much a week BEFORE I actually get to read any of these comics, so if something is a stinker, I take no blame on that.  Let's get to it!

Comics shipping this week

Getting quite a few books this week, but most of them are long running series in the middle of arcs, so not a lot jumping out at me as “you need to talk about this book.”

We Go Ape Over Kong: Skull Island, on Blu-ray and DVD Today!

KONG: SKULL ISLAND is not exactly a film that gave me high hopes in the beginning. Let's face it, the last two remakes of the feature (the 1976 John Guillermin version and even the 2005 Peter Jackson one) both left me very unfulfilled.

But Jordan Vogt-Roberts hits all the right notes, with a period piece set on the tail of the Vietnam War, and with a cast seemingly mostly borrowed from AVENGERS: INFINITY WARS. Vogt-Roberts wastes no time introducing the audience to the special-effects extravaganza that is Kong by starting in World War II, where an American pilot and his Japanese adversary both crash on the mysterious Skull Island, before fast-forwarding to 1973 and Nixon's "peace with honor" speech.

The Witch Boy an Unsubtle Parable on Gender Roles in Youth

The Witch Boy

Molly Ostertag's THE WITCH BOY is a less-than-subtle parable on gender and the accepted roles that go along with it.

The titular witch boy is Aster, who lives in a secluded village of magic users behind an enchanted barrier. The men grow up to become shape changers, guided by their spirit animals, who go out and hunt demons. The women learn magic spells for protection and healing. Aster has not been contacted by any spirit animals yet, and it's far past time for most boys to have had that experience. What's more, he perpetually hides where he can overhear the lessons taught to the girls so he can learn magic, even though this is knowledge that is forbidden to him.

Star Wars (Even More) Crochet: Get Your Geekcraft On!

Even More Star Wars Crochet

As we count down the days to “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” perhaps you’re itching for something to help fill the void. Never fear - cue up “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and pull out this Star Wars Even More Crochet kit, by Lucy Collin.

The kit is a “sequel” to Collin’s Star Wars Crochet, and comes with nearly everything you need to create two projects – a Jawa and BB-8:

  • yarn
  • size 3.5mm/E-4 metal crochet hook
  • plastic safety eyes
  • fiberfill stuffing
  • a tapestry needle
  • instruction book

I say “nearly everything” because you also need a stitch marker to keep your place between rounds. A regular safety pin works well for this purpose.

The Sounds of SIRENA Will Captivate You

The Sterling Renaissance Festival is a 7 week long event, that takes place on the weekends, featuring street actors, artisans, and stage performances meant to immerse visitors in the 1500's.

One such performance, by a trio of Triton's temptresses, will captivate you. I'm talking about:

SIRENA

Sirena is a musical/theatrical, experience that takes you back to mythical times where the sirens call would lure in shipwrecked lovers. Sailors both loved and feared them as they would become hypnotized by their song and lose their souls in the process.

WATCH: BIRTH OF THE DRAGON Will Bring Bruce Lee to Life

In a film loosely inspired by true events, BIRTH OF THE DRAGON is an homage to the classic kung fu movies that Bruce Lee became known for.

This is NOT a Bruce Lee biopic. It's meant to be more of an over-dramatization of events leading up to his controversial fight with Kung Fu master Wong Jack Man. BIRTH OF THE DRAGON was produced and directed in the style of Bruce Lee's own movies.

It sounds like the movie is meant to have a very meta feel.

WWE Studios and BH Tilt is bringing BIRTH OF THE DRAGON to theaters on August 25th, 2017 with a PG-13 rating. The movie will have a runtime of 91 minutes, which will probably be as quick and powerful as Lee's one-inch punch.
